Eurytus is one of the mortal centaurs who are the sons of Ixion, brother of Nessus. In some versions his name is Eurytion, but I have preferred to use the alternative Eurytus to avoid confusion with Peleus' father-in-law. Almost like the runt of a litter, he is heavily dependent upon Nessus, being less intelligent, more animalistic and prone to stupidity. He emulates his brother by espousing disdain for the gods and humans. But his naïveté and credulity mean that even Admetus can dupe him into attempting to abduct Pirithous' bride, Hippodamia.Even after Pirithous' and Acastus' barbaric vengeance against Eurytus and his brothers, Eurytus is still protected by Nessus. But Eurytus' devotion to Nessus will bring him to the attention of Heracles, an acquaintance which will be revisited in the future to deadly effect.
